from a 1968 national geographic found on the sidewalk

Ecuador: low and lofty land astride the equator. What does that mean? I haven't looked at a National Geographic since I was little, but something about this rubbed me the wrong way.
Side-by-side photos "highland indian boy" and "senorita of spanish blood" made me think that this was written by a fresh out of college giddy tall new england guy. There are worse examples of poorly written anecdotes, but I'll spare you. This only taught me that everyone in Eucador is beautiful, and that you can be an idiot and also a good photographer.
