If we stayed to dance one more mashed potato at the party,
If the day hadn't been so warm and unusual,
If I didn't plan my day around those turquoise earrings,
maybe they would still be whole, polished and oval.
but every moment of that day led up to the
smash
and crack of
one earring.
The stone stays cool, and I rub one for good luck
to calm down,
a reminder that one woman has done this
and so can I.
But I broke that,
the pattern and power of borrowed treasures.
