gardens

winter princess

Snap peas are probably the prettiest thing Jorge has grown in the garden so far. They are delicate with their tiny tendrils that you can attach to anything. We thought they might just be a beautiful vine, but this week they finally have pods!

I've had something on my mind for a while now that I thought might just be a silly idea, one that sprang out of moving home and all of a sudden having more time and leisure, more possibilities because a normal southern California backyard seems like acres and acres of farm land. I want to try to start a community garden in Downey. I decided that if this was going to happen, the first step would be to make it known and start gathering ideas, support, and help. Help is what will be most important. I've emailed several local community gardens and joined some groups on meetup.com. I am most excited about creating a community space, offering classes, bringing people together to do something good, lasting, and sustainable. Who knows where this will go and what will really happen, and it's scary making it public, but it felt like time to share.

Do you have any tips or lessons learned for this type of project?

Hey there, thanks for your sweet comment about the robot shop. They actually didn't seem too interested in taking on design volunteers and haven't heard from them since we met. Feel free to let me know if there's any way I can help with the other establishments. I'd still love to get involved and would love to hear about your involvement as well. Feel free to shoot me an email at amandajane@kinfolkmag.com.

Happy almost New Year!

Best,

Amanda

What an amazing idea! I know you could totally do it. I'll ask around for community garden tips.

Happy 2012!

blog break is over!

Thanks Dyan and Natalie. This will be a long work in progress, but I'm excited to even be thinking about it and seeing what's possible.

Amanda, sorry for the delay and I'll write to you very soon with more details about volunteering with them. Trust me, they will love your help!
