Palomar

Palomar State Park

Palomar Observatory

Warner Springs Ranch

This is how it went. I was very blissfully reading the newest Sunset on a Saturday night and dreaming about going on their recommended southern California daytrip to Palomar Mountin, and the next Sunday, there we were, freezing our butts off after taking a very windy road up the mountain, a breakfast of veggie sausage patties and french toast, taking a tour of the observatory and feeling very far away from everything.

Palomar State Park has easy, luscious, long and amazing trails ( dare I say nicer than Big Sur and Yosemite) and really great camping sites. The 15 is a beautiful highway and while Temecula is not a city worth mentioning, what's right behind it is worth the drive.

I needed this getaway right before I stumbled into a really crazy week, and it was a nice reminder of what's to come for our Yosemite trip next week. Please send any Yosemite recommendations my way. Oh and I just found out that I was conceived in Yosemite- it's all making sense.

Love these pics, Marisa. I've never heard of this place before...looks beautiful. I saw the latest sunset in passing at the store. i should've picked up a copy right then and there because i really want to read about backyard havens right now.

Palomar needs to be your next day trip or camping trip, seriously magical. We only went for the day, but the campsite at Palomar State Park is so so so so perfect, I'm thinking of going in the fall. The place with the pool is Warner Springs Ranch which I wouldn't really recommend, but it was my first shot at finding a mineral pool similar to places in Calistoga.
